White Knots in Rugs |

White knots in hand tied rugs are an inherent characteristic. When the loom is strung the warp yarns are under tension. As the weaving process proceeds and the rows are pounded down with various metal combs and tools. This process will cause the yarns to wear and seperate from the tool use. When these warp yarns break the weaver will tie in a splice resulting in two knots from the donor piece. These white knots will not be visible in a new rug as the face pile is above them. As time goes by and the rug wears due to foot traffic and vacuuming the surface yarns wear down. These knots will not show due to the soiling in a dirty rug but will "appear" when the rug is cleaned. Do not cut these knots as it will weaken the rugs foundation. It is possible, in some rugs, to have these knots dyed to match the surrounding area. |
